Charles Darwin 'On the Origin of Species' Exhibition

To celebrate the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin and 150 years since the publishing of On the Origin of Species, the Northern Territory Library has a very rare and valuable first edition copy of On the Origin of Species on display to the public throughout September.

The Northern Territory Library will also display books from its collection about Charles Darwin himself, the related expeditions, and those that discuss the On the Origin of Species publication and its ramifications for the future generations.

Charles Darwin On the Origin of Species Lunchtime Talk

Guest speaker Emeritus Professor Alan Powell - Professor, History and Political Science, Charles Darwin University

Professor Powell’s talk will look at the chain of events that led to the Beagle’s voyage of 1831-36, Darwin’s presence on the ship, and the effects of the voyage upon him – particularly his interaction with the ship’s officers.

It will discuss the Beagle’s subsequent voyage to northern Australia and the naming of Port Darwin, the long-term effects of the regimented Navy life on Darwin’s working habits, and his close association with other scientists who had made similar voyages; in particular, Thomas Huxley, who was the only one of them who ever visited the Northern Territory.

Professor Powell is Vice President of the NT Historical Society and he is a member of the Australian Association of Professional Historians. His areas of expertise include history, heritage and Indigenous history.
